Schmitz went with his friend Donna on the show, but what he didn’t know is that Scott Amedure was going to confess his secret crush on him on live TV. After receiving a steamy note from Amedure, Schmitz bought a gun because he couldn’t take the fact that someone gay was hitting on him.
Love Note Led to the Confrontation
After the taping of the show, a love note was sent which apparently offended Schmitz. The night before he went out drinking with some friends but apparently there was some type of argument that ensued between him and Amedure.
Jenny Jones May Have Led Amedure Into Admitting His Crush
A while after Amedure’s death, the family blamed The Jenny Jones Show for putting Amedure in a place that he would have to admit the crush. The family considered Schmitz mentally unstable. In fact, Jones initially wanted them to kiss on camera. Schmitz’s defense lawyer said that she kept “twisting the knife.”
Amedure Didn’t Know If Schmitz Was Gay or Not
Amedure commented on his attraction to him while Schmitz was working on a car. However, he said that no matter the fantasy he didn’t even know if Schmitz was gay.
Schmitz May Not Have Been In His Right Mind
He was smoking and drinking all night before he confronted Amedure, so some jurors thought that he may not have been mentally all there when shots were fired.
